There Will Be Blood

James "Blood" Ulmer's Memphis Blood - Little Red Rooster
I'm on one leg with back and knee issues, but I'm here with a Public Service Announcement to say don't get old. It's an exercise in humiliation and physical challenge. And, having gathered decades of the Earthrealm knowledge you'd need to make another person freak themselves into alternate dimensions, your genitals summarily fail like the Twin Towers, vaporized before they ever hit the ground.

But guess what, chicken butt? I've got two consecutive posts brewing, and I might do one on Sunday too. I'm like Johnny Unitas, trudging limpingly onto the gridiron as the 4th quarter winds down, to lead the team to one last defining score, aren't I? And the artists I cover are, in some cases, older and even less relevant to modern culture than Johnny Unitas ever was. What did I say about humiliation again?

I'm here like a hobbling hobbit because in June, we lost one of my all-time favorite guitar players. Well, not exactly lost, I hate that term. They just stop breathing and we put them in the ground. We know where they are, they're just not alive anymore.

The thing is, what they leave -- if handled halfway properly and with the reverent respect it commands -- when they leave exceeds the temporal value of any given human lifetime. Especially with people a little more on the fringe, who never sold mass quantities whilst here, but who made definitive strides paving very scenic roads others will subsequently drive upon.

So, yeah. I'm in here shedding blood so woodshed-inducing artists can have worthy elements added to their canon, to embellish that prospective aesthetic longevity.

No one may care now, in the age of AI and autotuned autocracy, but maybe after I'm long lowered into the turf with my disintegrated joints (I smoked them all, and don't any of you forget it), the aesthetic pendulum will swing back to Maybe I Should Make Something Worthy Of Being Famous About, and this page will make a nice little Museum of Rotary Phones. My husband has promised to keep it online once I'm finally flatlined, so maybe there is a glimmer of hope for a future where Kenny G and Miles Davis are still distinguishable.

So yes, it follows completely logically, right? You grab these unissued gems, rescued from the murk of dismissed history, and someday people will live in a world where folks can tell Ed Sheeran from James "Blood" Ulmer.

Oh yeah, one of these was recorded 21 years ago now. They both burn with mystically atavistic Funk Blues jazzfire, trust your gay Uncle J on that, OK?

I'll be back in 24, cripple-dicked as I may be, with a birthday thing for another supernova star of the firmament, who left us earlier this year.

Before that, feel free to draw some Blood, like the guy below did!--J.
